Frequently Asked Questions
How does free translation of a website work?
We will cover the cost of translation using a grant from Google provided you comply with the terms and conditions of the contract. When you agree to our terms and conditions, you will provide a list of up to 10 static webpages from your site you would like to be translated for free. You should pick static webpages that have the greatest longevity. As part of that contract, we will agree the date that a snapshot of the text on your website will be made. We will provide a translation into either BSL or ASL (subject to the contract) based on this snapshot.
Once the translation is available, we will provide the code which needs to be inserted into your webpages for the translation to be visible to visitors. As per the contract, we expect you to incorporate this code into your webpages within 30 days of us delivering the translation to you. If you do not do this then you will be liable for the cost as outlined in the contract. This is to ensure that the translation is published in a timely manner.
How do you define static vs dynamic content?
We define static content as information on your website that would typically remain unchanged for 6 months or more e.g. information about your company or products or services.
Any information that changes more regularly we define as dynamic. Examples of dynamic content may be new bulletins or blogs. Be mindful that pages that contain staff details may mean that those pages need dynamic updates to reflect internal changes in staff.
What is the minimum term of having the tool live on the website?
We expect you to keep the plugin active on your website for a minimum of 12 months. We recognise that websites change and that information gradually goes out of date. But we ask you to select pages for translation that are unlikely to change i.e. defined as static. For example, news or staff names and details are probably a poor choice and more suited to a dynamic update scheme. As information changes we can provide small updates (up to 10%) of the content. For any updates beyond 10%, for more than 10 pages, or for packages that would allow dynamic content updates, contact Signapse for costs.
What's the maximum term of our agreement with you?
The default contract is for 3 years. However, we agree to provide the translation for as long as it is required and active on your website. See next point.
What happens to the tool after the agreement ends?
The plugin will continue to operate beyond the agreement. Signapse agrees to continue to provide the translation for as long as it is required and active on your website. However, there will be no support for the plugin beyond the initial contract.
Our webpage content may change. How much can be retranslated?
As part of the grant, we will provide up to a 10% update of your content for free. Any further updates will be considered dynamic and are not covered by the grant or contract. For dynamic packages or updates beyond 10% you should contact the Signapse commercial team.
How often can the website be updated (that will be retranslated)?
We can update your website as often as you like but under the grant only 10% of the content can be updated for free. Signapse are happy to discuss maintenance fees beyond the scope of the grant but our advice is to try and ensure the content that is translated under the grant is as static as possible and therefore has the greatest longevity.
Why doesn't the tool have generative AI translation available?
At the moment we use a mix of real human translators and AI. This is to ensure all our translations meet strict quality controls. As our technology improves, you will see more and more content coming directly from AI. However, we can generate full AI translations now, if you are interested in being an early adopter then please let us know. We are always looking for opportunities to test our latest advances..
How long will the process take from start to end?
On average, it takes 4-6 weeks from signing your agreement to us providing you with the code to implement the plugin on your webpages.
We may need some pages to be updated quickly. Can you support a fast turnaround?
Speed of translation depends on the complexity of the update but for clients happy to utilise our AI product, turnarounds can be reduced considerably. We would be happy to discuss this with you.
What if we need more frequent updates to our webpages?
For a small retainer fee, we can accommodate updates beyond the grant on a commercial basis. For pricing, please contact Signapse.
How the plugin be integrated into our website?
Integrating the plugin to your website just includes the inclusion of a simple line of code. We have instructions on how to do this here: https://docs.signapse.ai/website-translations/overview
Can the plugin be used for more than 10 pages?
Under the grant, free translation is limited to 10 webpages. However, the plugin can be used to translate additional webpages, or indeed your full website. Please let us know if you would like to discuss this with the Signapse team.
Could the background colour be changed?
This is not something we offer at present, but as we roll out new updates to the plugin your website will get automatically be upgraded to include new features. These will give the user more control over the appearance of the plugin.
Are there captions available in the tool
Not at present, but as we roll out new updates to the plugin your website can be upgraded to include new features which will give the user more control over the appearance of the plugin.
How can the tool be made larger on the page?
The plugin has controls to reduce and increase the size as well as iconise it. The viewer can also move its position in the browser if it is interfering with their view. You can see its use and have a play with this functionality on our own website here https://www.signapse.ai/ Just click on a paragraph of text to see it translated into BSL.
Can we choose how users activate the tool on a webpage?
We currently offer three activation options. Automatic: the tool instantly pops up when a webpage is loaded; Manual: the user must click the ASL/BSL button to activate the tool; and Custom; if you have a custom button on your site that you would like users to utilise, we can also support this.
Can we choose where the ASL/BSL activation button appears on our webpage?
The activation button for the plugin can be positioned in either the bottom right, bottom left, centre right or top right of your webpage. This will be consistent across all your chosen webpages.
Instead of selecting and sharing our chosen webpages up-front, can we share webpages for translation periodically?
To ensure you can benefit from our website plugin swiftly, and to ensure an efficient implementation process, we need all of your chosen pages to be shared with us at the start of our agreement. If for any reason this may not be possible, please let us know.
When does the grant come to an end?
The funding for this programme comes to an end in 2026. We are limited in the number of organisations we can support and may complete our free translations before then.
Will the same translator be used across all of my webpages?
While we endeavour that the same translator is used for all of your chosen webpages, we cannot guarantee this under the grant programme.
Can we choose the translator we want to appear on our webpages?
Unfortunately, this is not possible under the grant programme. If you are interested in selecting the appearance of your translator you will need to speak to the commercial team.
Will our translations include local signs?
We understand that regional variation can be found within all sign languages. While we endeavour to accommodate regional signs where possible, we are not able to tailor our translations to particular geographies under the grant.
Could our "in-house" translator do the translation for this tool?
Unfortunately, this is not possible under the grant programme.
Can we choose specific activation modes for individual pages?
Due to the plugin's functionality, this isn’t possible. You can select one activation mode (Automatic, Manual and Custom) to apply to all pages.
